St. Francis senior Samuel Franco spent two weeks in Lake Tahoe and two weeks in Big Bear during the summer preparing for the cross country season this fall. That worked has paid off. The senior competed in the prestigious Sweepstakes race in the Woodbridge Classic in Irvine two weeks ago, finishing seventh overall with a personal-best time of 14 minutes, 9.9 seconds. It is the best mark in the San Gabriel Valley this season, and among the top 10 marks in the CIF Southern Section. Franco won Mission League titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters during the spring track season.
